    A Message From Our Principal

    February 17, 2019

    Hello Drive Families,

I hope you are all enjoying your long weekend as there is no school tomorrow, Monday, Feb, 18th  in observance of President's Day.  School will resume on Tuesday with our regular 1:22 p.m. dismissal.

This week we are going to be quite busy:

Tuesday - This Tuesday Lexia Afterschool Intervention begins for selected students who received the yellow invitation.  It will be from 1:30 - 2:30 p.m. in the computer lab and room 19.  Only those students who returned their yellow form by the deadline will participate at this time.  As space opens  in the future, additional students will be included.

Wednesday - Our February ELAC Meeting with Mr. Bonilla will begin at 8:15 a.m. in the library.  We will be finalizing our Budget Needs Assessment for the 2019-2020 school year as we begin budget development in the next month.

Thursday - Our February SSC Meeting @ 2:30 p.m. and Governance Meeting @ 3:00 p.m. will meet in the library.  We will continue the budget discussion and share any recommendations from our ELAC committee as we prepare to send out our needs assessments to all stakeholders in the next couple weeks.  All are welcome to join in this discussion.

Friday - Our 2nd grading period ended on Friday and report cards will be  sent home this Friday and during the following week.  Please be sure to review your child's report card with them as you discuss their successes. Make a plan together to address any areas of concern so that they may become successes.

Attendance - As discussed at Friday's Awards Assembly Lockhurst is making great strides in the area of Language Arts and Mathematics although we fall short in the area of attendance.  Now that we are back on track after the fires, holidays, and the strike I will be reinstating the monthly attendance free-play and closely examining all students' attendance.  It is very important for our children's social emotional and academic success to be in school every day and on time.  This means being in line with their class at morning bell.  It is very difficult for many of our children who come in tardy on a regular basis. They walk into their classrooms after instruction begins and routines have started for the day.  I thank you for your support and hard work with having your child in school each day on time.

Lastly, we had our Spring Lockdown Drill on Friday.  Our teachers and students did a wonderful job practicing the proper procedures in the event of a real lockdown.  We will continue to practice in the future so that we can be fully prepared in the event of any emergency.

I hope you all have a relaxing and warm remainder of the weekend as I look forward to seeing you all back on Tuesday.

    This is all for now.

    Your Lockhurst Principal,

    Mrs. DaCorsi

    Pedestrian and Traffic Safety Tips

    Dear Lockhurst Parents,

As you all know our children’s safety is extremely important to me each day.  With this, I am asking for everyone’s assistance when picking up and dropping off your children each day.  Below are pedestrian and traffic safety tips.

    • Always use a crosswalk, never cross in the middle of any street.
    • Students and parents are expected to USE THE CROSSWALKS AT ALL TIMES. NO JAYWALKING!
    • Always look both ways before crossing, even if you’re in a crosswalk.
    • Please use caution and be considerate of other drivers. DO NOT MAKE 3-point or U-turns in the  middle of the street.
    • No double-stopping/parking. Please be respectful of our neighbors
    • Texting while driving is illegal and unsafe. Drivers must concentrate on the road, not their cellphones.
    • Completely stop at every stop sign. We do not have crossing guards so please look out for pedestrians.
    • Slow down! Children can be unpredictable and could run out into your driving path.
    • No stopping in the middle of the road to drop off or pick up students.

    Car Valet Program

    • Please enter and exit the valet line cautiously. Slow down!
    • When dropping students off, use a clockwise pattern around the school, if applicable.
    • Have children exit the car from the curbside only.
    • Have your child’s backpack, lunch box, and/or musical instruments with them before they exit, not in the trunk.

Peak traffic times are between 7:40am – 8:00am and for the first 20 minutes immediately after school in the afternoons. Please be mindful of the rules above to ensure the safety of our children.

I thank you for your support with helping to keep our students and the streets around our school safe.  Please feel free to stop by the office in the morning or just prior to dismissal to pick up a valet vest to volunteer your time in the valet program.  A few minutes each day can help to prevent a situation in the future and help to enforce a safe environment for our students to come to and from school.

Please be sure to inform the office if your address changes at any time during the school year.  You will need to bring in verification of your new address (DWP bill, Gas bill, rental agreement, escrow papers, mortgage statement).

Student Emergency Information Cards are being mailed home to all students prior to the start of school.  Please fill them out, sign them and return them by the first day of school.  You can update or fill out a new card anytime during the school year.

    Thank you.
